MISSION

Using music as its primary lens, Music of Reality refracts and explores various disciplines in order to forge spaces for cross-cultural dialogue.

How does music elucidate particle physics?

How can music amplify the urgency of the climate crisis?

How do coral formations correspond to sound?

How are biological mechanisms perceived through harmony and dissonance?

These are some of the questions we aim to address through our initiative.

Our GOALS are to:

  1. Bring people together into a collaborative, physical and imaginary space,

  2. Fuse, synthesize, and cross-pollinate ideas between disciplines while preserving both
    (a) spontaneity of creative emergence and
    (b) disciplinary uniqueness and integrity,

  3. Share and make accessible ideas and connections from each event with the hope they spark further syncretic and communal work.

In each collaboration, music serves as not a secondary, background, ancillary, or reactive instrument, but as the point through which distinct fields are focused. Our vision is to use music for kindling perceptions and conversations in the mind that are not purely intellectual but also extrasensory, sublime, and fantastical in their dimensions. We strive to demonstrate that science is not a wry, technical thing but as emotional and uncanny as the intangible reality from which music emerges. Music, in our mission, is akin to magic and alchemy, evolution and cosmogony.

Our events range from large, highly-produced evenings involving multiple performances and lectures to informal workshops and discussions. We commission new musical and artistic works. We are interested in the mosaic energy and excitement that come from a sparked conversation. We are committed to building and expanding a community of different minds.

Music of Reality is directed by Sophia Vastek and David Ibbett and headquartered in Boston and the New York capital region, with events happening there and beyond.
